Short answer: For most Wilmington-area patios, pool decks and driveways, stamped concrete is the better value: it costs less per square foot than quality pavers, has no joints for weeds, ants or sand to wash out, and is one solid slab that will not shift. Pavers win when you need easy spot repairs or access to buried utilities. Both need resealing every 2–3 years near the coast.
Side-by-side comparison
| Stamped concrete | Pavers | |
|---|---|---|
| Installed cost (Wilmington) | $20–$33 / sq ft | Typically higher for comparable quality |
| Weeds & ants in joints | No joints between stones | Common; joints need polymeric sand |
| Sandy soil & heavy rain | One slab; does not wash out | Sand base can wash out and shift |
| Repairs | Harder to patch invisibly | Lift and replace individual pavers |
| Maintenance | Clean + reseal every 2–3 years | Re-sand joints + reseal every 2–3 years |
| Design options | Slate, stone, wood plank, brick, custom borders | Many shapes, colors and patterns |
| Pool decks | Cool colors + grit sealer = safe, smooth to clean | Good, but joints collect sand and debris |
How each handles Wilmington weather
Coastal North Carolina rarely freezes hard, so the classic freeze-thaw argument for pavers matters less here. What matters more is sandy soil, a high water table, heavy summer storms and salt air. A properly reinforced stamped slab on a compacted base spreads load across the whole surface and does not depend on bedding sand staying put.
Pavers handle minor settling gracefully — you lift and reset them — but in sandy soils with poor edge restraint they can creep, rut and sink, especially on driveways.
When pavers are the right call
- There are underground utilities or irrigation you will need to reach later.
- Your HOA requires pavers in a specific style.
- You want a permeable surface for stormwater rules on a lot near the water.
Our recommendation
For patios, pool decks and walkways where you want a high-end look with the least long-term hassle, stamped concrete is usually the smarter investment in Wilmington. We are happy to talk through both options on a free site visit — and tell you honestly if pavers fit your project better.
